The department is expected to officially announce the decision sometime Monday.
The program provides temporary status in the U.S. for people from countries affected by natural disasters.
El Salvador said it will put every effort into keeping TPS protections for its citizens intact as the impoverished country is heavily reliant on money transfers from the U.S.
“It’s clear that the Department of Homeland Security won’t make a decision that goes into effect immediately,” said Hugo Martinez, Minister of Foreign Affairs El Salvador. “So with that timeline, there’s a window of opportunity to lobby consistently for a legislation in favor of our fellow TPS citizens.”
Salvadoran migrants received their status in 2001 following a massive volcano eruption in their home country.
However, the DHS says TPS is not a path to citizenship as previous administrations had repeatedly extended the program.
