AG Sessions Says ‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy Will Deter Unlawful Entries

Attorney General Jeff Sessions doubles down on his new zero tolerance immigration policy.

Speaking to a group of law enforcement officers in New Mexico on Wednesday, Sessions said his new policy is in response to what he called a crisis at the border.
Sessions said he is dedicating more resources to fight the surge of illegal entry into the country.
Opponents of the move said the increased prosecutions will lead to more arrests, putting more people in jails, and jamming the courts. But Sessions insisted his policy is not about increasing arrests, but instead decreasing unlawful entry.
“Our goal ultimately is not arrest, to see how many we can arrest, but our goal is to deter people from attempting to come illegally.” – Jeff Sessions, attorney general
Sessions issued a memo last week telling U.S. attorneys to prosecute all immigration cases forwarded to them by the Department of Homeland Security.
The policy was in response to a DHS report saying illegal entries for the month of march was up 37% from last year.
