Colorado Lawmakers Introduce Bill To Improve Mental Health Treatment Options

Colorado is attempting to tackle the national issue of mental health with new legislation.
On Friday, lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill to improve housing and treatment options for individuals suffering from severe mental illness.

Currently under Colorado law, people appearing to be an imminent danger to themselves or others can be placed on a 72-hour hold against their will.
The newly proposed bill, however, would establish long-term solutions for individuals experiencing any mental health crisis.
Mental Health Colorado estimates more than 35,000 people are battling the illness in the state.
“It’s profoundly personal,” stated Andrew Romanoff, President and CEO of Mental Health Colorado. “I lost my closest relative to suicide three years ago, and in part, because of a mental illness we didn’t detect or diagnose or treat.”
If it passes, nearly $3.5 million will go towards the initiative. Colorado’s State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee is set to vote next week.
