Global Donors Expected To Raise Over $6 Billion For Syrian Crisis

Representatives from more than 70 countries are gathering in Brussels for a two day conference to discuss efforts to increase humanitarian aid for Syria as thousands flee the war-torn nation.
The meeting— hosted by the U.N. and E.U — began Wednesday, and various governments and aid groups are expected to contribute more than six billion dollars.

The funds will be used for humanitarian aid within Syrian borders, and to help Syrian refugees in Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.
The E.U. policy chief said the fundraising will support early recovery in Syria in hopes of returning electricity and water to affected areas.
“We want Syrians to know that they are not forgotten, we’re appealing on their behave for an end to the violence,” said Mark Lowcock, Representative for U.N. Humanitarian Affairs. “For a political solution, for a safe future with hope of education, health care, work and returning home — in other words, for a normal life.”
Neighboring countries have urged the international community to help alleviate the stress of housing massive amounts of Syrian refugees.
The U.S., E.U., Japan and Norway are among the world’s top donors
