Investigators say the engine of the Southwest Airlines flight forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday fell victim to “metal fatigue.”
In a statement Wednesday the NTSB chairman said there is evidence of blades separating as a result of weakening metal from repeated use. One woman died after being partially sucked out of the plane when the window she was sitting next to was shattered by debris from the engine.
This comes after a flight in August 2016 also experienced engine failure but resulted in no casualties. Officials claim it is too early to connect the two technical failures.
