Germany To Increase NATO Defense Spending Amid U.S. Pressure To Pay Fair Share

Germany is boosting its NATO defense spending amid pressure by the U.S. for member countries to pay their fair share.
In an address Monday, Germany’s defense minister said the government will allocate 1.5-percent of gross domestic product by 2025.

Experts said the jump in spending is a significant increase from the current percentage of 1.2-percent, but still short of its NATO obligation.
Members of the military alliance agreed to move towards spending two-percent of GDP on defense by 2024.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the country is committed to fulfilling its international responsibilities.
“Those who are familiar with the details — and that’s everyone in this room — know that the two percent are not some fetish with which the German army has nothing to do,” commented Merkel. “Rather, fulfilling our international commitments plus the defense of the alliance and our country make such an expense necessary.”
The chancellor also said Germany will remain committed to the Iran Nuclear Deal despite the U.S. withdrawal.
So far, 15 of the 29 NATO allies have vowed to increase their defense budget.
