North Korea Pledges To Scrap Nuke Program Ahead Of China, U.S. Meeting

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reaffirming his commitment to denuclearize his regime during a surprise meeting with the Chinese president this week.
The two-day meeting came just ahead of President Trump’s Tuesday conference call with Xi Jinping, where they discussed trade as well as their ongoing diplomacy with Pyongyang.
The recent flurry of official meetings is creating optimism the regime will stay on course to scrap its nuclear program ahead of the planned summit with President Trump.
“Right now we have an unprecedented opportunity to change the course of history on the Korean peninsula — I underscore the word opportunity,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “We’re in the beginning stages of the work and the outcome is certainly yet unknown, but one thing is certain — this administration will not repeat the mistakes of the past.”
During a luncheon with dictator Kim Jong Un, Xi offered his support of the north’s decision to shift their legislative focus away from nuclear development and towards bolstering it’s economy.

This comes after President Moon Jae-in submitted a proposal suggesting economic cooperation with the north during the inter-Korean summit last month.
The plan reportedly contains an initiative to import energy from South Korea in exchange for the rogue regime ending its nuclear development.
The announcement suggests the two Koreas may be working towards reintegration.
Analysts say a large portion of the north’s decision to pull the plug on the program can be credited to President Trump’s high pressure campaign to denuclearize the regime.
This weeks meeting comes ahead of Kim’s planned summit with President Trump, which is expected to take place sometime this month.
